USF.jpgThe University of South Florida has reported a 32% decline in crimes since the year 2005 with arrests spiking up 23%. Reported felonies have dropped from 568 in 2005 to 388 in 2008. This includes seven categories of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. There has only been one murder on campus since the year 2005. The number of arrests have also risen from 238 in 2005 to 293 last year.
However, the University Police Department has reported that overall crime is down on the Tampa campus. Most of the offenses that take place are committed by those individuals with no association to the university. These offenders are considered opportunistic to circumstances. A spokesperson for the department stated that the overwhelming visible police presence has contributed to the positive statistics.
In 2006, the University of South Florida campus started hosting DUI checkpoints and different officer saturation efforts. The USF Police Department has even won awards for their efforts, winning a Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle.
